If your appliance is still operating, avoid jumping directly to a parts replacement. Start with the simple conditions you can verify safely, then use the remaining symptoms to decide whether the issue is likely to need professional testing.

Common Reasons This Happens

  • A thermal limiter or protective device is open on an applicable model.
  • A bake/broil selector switch or temperature-control input is not completing the command.
  • An igniter or heating component is not operating.
  • A door/lock input is preventing heat.
  • A relay, control board, or wiring connection is open.
  • Required power is missing to the heating circuit even though control lights still work.

More than one condition can be present at the same time. For example, a small airflow restriction can become a noticeable cooling problem during hot weather, or a dirty burner can become difficult to ignite immediately after a spill. The model number and the exact sequence of symptoms matter.

What You Can Check Safely

  1. Verify which lights or knob halos illuminate when Bake is selected.
  2. Check whether Broil works when Bake does not, or whether both modes are dead.
  3. Note whether surface burners operate normally.

  5. Check the breaker once, but do not repeatedly reset a tripping circuit.

A Repeated Thermal-Limiter Problem Usually Has a Reason

A protective limiter is designed to respond to an unsafe temperature condition. If the same range repeatedly opens a limiter, the repair should include the reason the area overheated—such as door alignment, airflow, control behavior, or another heat-management problem.

This detail is useful because it changes the diagnostic direction. Note what the appliance was doing immediately before the symptom appeared, whether the problem is constant or intermittent, and whether another function still works normally.

When a Reset Helps—and When It Doesn't
